Tiverton Castle was built by Richard de Redvers, the first Earl of Devon, in the 12th century, during the reign of Henry the first.
Over the many centuries, the castle has had several different owners, all adding to its rich history. Under these circumstance, it comes as no great surprise that the castle is haunted by various ghosts.
One of the hauntings involves the ghost of a sad young lady, believed to be a member of the Courtney family who were past owners of the castle.
It seems that on the day of her wedding the young lady was playing a game of hide and seek with the revelers. She found a large sturdy chest and decided to hide in it, but as she closed the lid, the lock snapped shut. Unable to release the lock from the inside, the poor lady soon met her death by suffocation. Legend says her body was not discovered until years after the original event took place.
Over the years, there have been many reported sightings of the ghostly figure of a sorrowful young lady wandering through parts of the old castle. It is said that the ghost of the young bride is often glimpsed in the banqueting hall, passing through doorways or looking out of the mullion windows.http://www.devonghosts.com/2011/02/ghost-of-sorrowful-bride.html
